Tell Speaker Pelosi: Stop arms sales for the war in Yemen
The conflict in Yemen has killed innocent civilians, destroyed health clinics, schools, factories, farms, and precipitated a severe cholera epidemic. Today, it is the world’s largest humanitarian crisis.
You can help end this conflict: Tell Speaker Pelosi that Congress must stop fueling this war by unconditionally suspending arms sales to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates in the upcoming 2020 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).
As many as 16,000 civilians have died, as many of 2,000 of those from cholera alone. A serious financial crisis and an embargo has limited fuel and food imports. Nearly 16 million Yemenis don't know where their next meal is coming from. Children in particular are among the most vulnerable—more than one million children are malnourished, and the UN estimates a child dies every 10 minutes in Yemen.
Despite the magnitude of suffering in Yemen, President Trump recently bypassed a Congressional review process to approve an additional 22 arms sales worth $8 billion to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. However, Congress still has the power to block these sales from moving forward.
It's urgent that you call Speaker Pelosi now and tell her to unconditionally suspend arms sales for the war in Yemen. Congress is considering legislation now that could stop the flow of arms to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Instead of fueling the conflict, the US should push for peace in Yemen at the UN, hold all parties to the conflict accountable, elevate the voices of women, and restore Yemen’s economy before it is too late.
